چکیده
I must thank the Medical Staffofthe Royal Victoria Hospital forthe greathonourthattheyhavebestowed upon me today in asking me to deliver the 2004 Oration. It is interesting to note that in 1852, when DrAndrew George Malcolm was giving this oration he stated that the oration was "an old established custom". From the first Oration in 1827 until 1883 the opening address probably took the form of the 1st clinical lecture of the teaching year. In 1883 it is recorded in the Medical Staff Minutes of the Belfast Royal Hospital that there should be "an introductory address" given annually, and so the tradition continues to this day.

Anaesthesia and the broken hearted. 170th annual oration: Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast 2nd October 1997.
I would like to thank the Medical Staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital for the honour accorded to me with their invitation to deliver the Annual Oration in this Bicentenary year. Studying the list of Orators in "The Royal Victoria Hospital A History 1797-1997" by Professor Richard Clarke has, if anything, served to increase a natural nervousness and maybe reinforces the idea that, at my age, th...

The tradition of the Annual Oration was introduced in the days when almost all clinical studies were carried out in this hospital, to welcome new clinical medical students. The world has changed since then and with it the curriculum, the academic calendar and, more than anything else, medical care. Although we may bemoan many of these changes, few of us would want to go back to medicine as it w...

This oration, and the record of it for publication, mainly focuses on the new Royal Victoria Hospital building opened officially on 2 September 2003, but it is interesting to compare and contrast the needs of the Royal Victoria Hospital at the ends of the 19th and 20th centuries. At both times there was increasing dissatisfaction with the hospital's accommodation while the demands on the hospit...

I am grateful to my fellow members of staff for doing me the honour of asking me to give this, the 168th, annual oration, but honour and pleasure of course are not synonymous, and this occasion for me, while a great honour, is a qualified pleasure probably for the audience too, so our sympathies are mutual. There is however one aspect which is pleasurable, and that is to be introduced as a lady...

The great majority of these Orations have been delivered by men, but since 1995 the medical staff have to some extent redressed the balance albeit belatedly, and Professor, now Dame Ingrid Allen gave the Oration in 1995. Last ear Professor Jennifer Adgey gave the Millennium Oration. It gives me great pleasure to follow her as Orator and when I look down the list of previous Orators it makes me ...
